If your dryer will not turn off, check whether drying has finished and a wrinkle-care option is tumbling the load. Use the stop control specified for your model. A lit display alone does not mean the drum is running. If the drum keeps moving after the correct stop command, stop using the dryer and arrange service.
Stop immediately for abnormal operation
Do not reach into a moving drum. If it continues turning with the door open, or you notice smoke or a burning smell, stop use and disconnect power if you can do so safely. Do not open panels, bypass a door switch or strike the cabinet to make it stop. Internal electrical and gas-system repairs belong with qualified service.
Has drying finished, or is the cycle still active?
A drying cycle, a cooling phase and an after-cycle wrinkle option are different operating states. Before deciding that the timer is faulty, note the displayed message, selected option and whether tumbling is continuous or periodic.
Normal wrinkle protection has an intended ending and a model-specific way to stop it. A drum that ignores that stop instruction is a different problem. Do not keep waiting simply because another dryer's wrinkle option lasts longer.
Samsung: END or a drum light can remain on
On Samsung dryers covered by its shutdown guide, END stays displayed until the door opens. With Wrinkle Prevent selected, the drum initially turns for a few minutes without heat, then tumbles intermittently; opening the door stops it. Wait for all motion to stop before reaching inside.
Some newer models also leave the drum light on briefly after Power is pressed. Check for actual drum movement instead of treating a light or END message alone as evidence that the motor is still running.
LG WKHC152H**: END and a dashed rectangle
On this WashTower family, selected Wrinkle Care tumbles periodically for up to two hours or until the door opens. After drying, the dashed rectangle and ENd mean only Power works. Press Power before unloading. Other cycle buttons being inactive in this state does not establish a faulty board.
GE: the dial can stop at the Extended Tumble mark
GE's electromechanical models covered by its guide have about 15 minutes of unheated Extended Tumble after drying. The option applies to Cottons and Casuals or Easy Care cycles. With Extended Tumble switched off, the dryer stops at the Extended Tumble mark on the dial. That position alone does not mean the timer failed to reach the correct endpoint.
The electronic models with a digital display covered by the same guide provide one hour of unheated tumbling. A selected signal may sound repeatedly as a reminder to remove the load. Check which control type you have before applying either duration.
LG WKHC152H**: CL is a different state
On this LG family, CL alternates with remaining time. Control Lock disables all buttons except Power, does not lock the door and persists after switching off.
To unlock, turn power on and hold Dry Time for three seconds. Use your own manual for other models; this differs from the completed-cycle ENd state.
If the remaining time keeps increasing
A Sensor Dry cycle can extend while it is still trying to dry the load. Mixed fabric thickness, a dirty filter or sensor area, an unsuitable cycle and low room temperature are among the conditions LG lists. Follow the model's cleaning instructions and use a suitable load; do not treat an empty-drum experiment as a normal drying-time benchmark.
A successful Timed Dry run does not demonstrate that Sensor Dry ends correctly:
- One LG DLEX3900B owner said a technician's Timed Dry check did not reproduce the problem. Sensor operation repeatedly changed from six minutes remaining to sixteen. A later update reported a board replacement, without enough follow-up to establish a lasting outcome.
- Another LG owner reported an HS display and repeated time additions despite sensor replacement, duct cleaning and a reset. Timed Dry still worked; a board was subsequently ordered, but a completed repair was not established.
Those are individual observations, not a rule that added minutes mean a bad board. For the opposite symptom—Sensor Dry ending too soon with wet clothes—use the separate Timed Dry versus Sensor Dry guide.
If the drum keeps running after the stop command
Continuous motion with the controls off, or a timer repeatedly advancing into another cycle, needs service once the normal after-cycle feature has been ruled out. Door-interlock, timer, start-switch and control faults can produce overlapping symptoms; the symptom alone does not select a replacement part.
Samsung's guide recommends Power first, then a circuit-breaker power reset if the controls do not respond, followed by service if the fault remains. Do not repeat resets as a way to keep operating a malfunctioning dryer. A separate dryer not heating guide covers loss of heat; it does not make uncontrolled motion normal.
Record whether an apparent repair lasted
One owner of a Kenmore 110.62802 reported that two replacement timers did not stop the timer advancing into another cycle. The owner later reported success after a start-switch replacement. That sequence supports asking for a diagnosis, not ordering the same part for every dryer that runs on.
A separate LG gas-dryer owner described a thermistor replacement helping for four loads before the problem returned. Further work also failed after four loads; a later board replacement was described only as seeming OK. The exact model was not supplied, and the component diagnosis and long-term outcome were not independently confirmed.
For a service visit, record the model, cycle and option names, exact display, whether drying had finished, and what happened after pressing the proper stop control. Include previous repairs and how many loads passed before recurrence. A short successful test and a lasting repair are different claims.
