If your dryer won't start, check its power, close the door fully, turn off Control Lock and use the correct Start action for the model. Lights or a click do not identify a failed part.
This guide is for a household tumble dryer whose drum does not begin turning. If it already tumbles, use the running but not heating guide or the Timed Dry works but Sensor Dry ends early guide.
Stop first for a smell, smoke or repeated breaker trip
Do not keep pressing Start if there is a burning smell, smoke or a breaker that trips again. Leave the dryer off and arrange qualified help. If you smell gas, leave without operating electrical switches and contact the gas emergency service from outside.
The checks below stay outside the cabinet. Do not bypass a door or belt switch, hold a safety switch closed, test live terminals or disconnect a gas line.
No response at all: check the supply for this dryer
Look at the accessible plug and the home's labeled dryer breaker. Do not reach behind an unstable stacked machine or handle a damaged connection. A loose, scorched or damaged cord or outlet needs an electrician; turn off the circuit if it is safe to do so.
For a tripped breaker, follow the dryer's manual: move the breaker fully OFF before returning it ON. Stop if it trips again. Conventional US electric dryers commonly have a two-pole supply, while gas dryers still need electricity for the controls and motor. Compact and heat-pump models can differ, so do not apply a gas dryer's outlet check to every electric machine.
A working drum light is useful information, not a complete electrical test. If the supply remains uncertain, have it checked professionally before ordering a control board.
Power is on: check the door, Start and lock
Remove clothing caught at the door opening and close it normally. If it will not latch, or its catch is damaged, arrange repair. Do not slam it or try to defeat the door switch. A light going out does not prove every contact in the starting circuit works.
Choose a drying cycle and follow the Start label. Whirlpool and Maytag describe models that require a 2–5 second hold. On their touch controls, use a dry fingertip; a wet finger or fingernail may not register reliably. That timing is not a universal instruction for every brand.
Check for Control Lock or Child Lock. Use the buttons marked on your panel or the exact model's manual. Samsung's lock indicator can resemble a baby or a smiling padlock. A locked panel can prevent Start from responding even though the display is lit.
Samsung: does Time Dry actually count down?
After checking any error message, the door and Child Lock, select Time Dry, then touch and hold Start. On models with a digital countdown, watch it for 1–2 minutes.
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| Time does not decrease | Recheck the door, lock and Start action. The cycle has not started correctly. Address any error that appears. |
| Time decreases but the drum stays still | Request service. The countdown does not prove the motor or belt is working. |
| No digital timer is provided | Skip this test. If the dryer still will not spin after the basic checks, request service. |
This is a start check, not a vent test or a way to identify which internal part has failed.
LG: Check Filter can be a reminder before starting
A blinking Check Filter at power-on does not, by itself, mean the machine detected a blockage. Clean the lint filter, refit it and start the cycle as directed.
For LG DLE2101W/R/S/L and DLG2102W/R/S/L, the manual identifies CHK.FILTER as a startup reminder that goes out when Start/Pause is pressed. LG's support guidance says to request service if the dryer still will not start or powers off after the filter has been cleaned and reinserted.
Do not keep cleaning an already clean filter while overlooking a different message. For heating or other LG display symptoms, see the LG dryer guide.
Record a Samsung error before considering a reset
Photograph the exact message or blinking pattern and follow its troubleshooting instructions first. A Samsung power reset clears error codes from memory. Repeatedly clearing a returning code can remove information a technician needs.
Where Samsung's troubleshooting calls for a reset, its general guidance is to disconnect power for 1–5 minutes, then restore it. If the code returns after the appropriate checks and reset, leave it recorded and request service. A vanished message alone does not establish that the underlying fault is repaired.
Humming, clicking or running only while Start is held
A click alone does not tell you whether a relay, switch, motor or belt is at fault. If the drum remains stationary and the dryer hums, stop the attempt and arrange diagnosis. Do not reach into the drum to give it a powered push.
If it runs only while you keep Start pressed beyond the normal starting action, release the button and stop using it. Clamping the button down is not a repair. Tell the technician exactly when the motor stops; different designs have different starting and safety circuits.
It stopped hot and now will not restart
Report any unusually long drying times, restricted exhaust or previous shutdown before the no-start symptom. A thermal safety device can interrupt operation, but a stationary drum does not prove that a thermal fuse has failed.
Clean the accessible lint filter and look for a crushed visible exhaust hose without moving unsafe equipment. Leave the dryer off if it overheated. Ask the technician to assess the cause of overheating as well as any failed device. Replacing a fuse while leaving an airflow problem unresolved can leave the original problem in place.
If parts have already been changed, bring the sequence
These four owner-reported outcomes show why the order of events matters. They are individual accounts, not diagnoses for other dryers.
- GE electric dryer, light still working: replacing the starter did not restore operation. The owner later reported that replacing a household supply fuse did. The light had not settled the supply question.
- Maytag MEDC400BW1: unplugging and reconnecting the dryer, then resetting both breaker handles, did not help. The owner later reported recovery after a thermal-fuse replacement. That account does not establish the cause of the fuse failure.
- Samsung DVE50R5400V/A3: cleaning after a burning smell was followed by brief operation, then a no-start condition. The owner subsequently found the belt had been dislodged during the cleaning and reported recovery after it was corrected.
- GE GTDP490ED3WS: timer and control-board replacements did not solve the problem. The owner later identified the door switch, despite the earlier light-based assumption that it was working.
Give the service technician the model label, fuel type, exact display, sounds at Start and everything changed since the last successful load. For the Samsung countdown branch, include whether the displayed minutes decreased. Those observations are more useful than another untested parts order.
